ORGANIZATION 14TH TERM (2025-2027)

Current Presidential greeting

14th Term President
Raheed A. Balogun
Prof. Dr. med.
Division of Nephrology
University of Virginia

Distinguished colleagues, friends, and members of the global apheresis community,

It is an extraordinary honor to serve as the role of President of the International Society for Apheresis. I am humbled by the trust you have placed in me, and deeply grateful to Ken Yamaji my predecessor, Andre Kaplan, my long-term mentor, all past presidents and members of the council and members at large of ISFA who have built this society into the global beacon it is today. The support of my wife and family cannot be overemphasized.

ISFA thrives because of the dedication of its international members, from Europe and Asia to the Americas, Africa and Oceania. Together, we represent not just different regions, but also different specialties: nephrology, hematology, neurology, transplantation, and critical care. Our shared commitment to advancing therapeutic apheresis binds us.

Strategic Vision Overview – 'Advancing ISFA: 2025–2027'

Over the next two years, I ask that we consider focusing on four strategic priorities:

1. Global Equity in Apheresis Access

2. Education, Training, and Competency Support

3. Interdisciplinary Research and Innovation

4. Organizational Strength and Visibility

Global Equity in Apheresis Access

Many parts of the world still lack access to life-saving apheresis therapies. My vision is to deepen ISFA's collaboration with national societies to promote:

- Regional mentorship programs

- Low-cost equipment partnerships

- Support for emerging apheresis centers in LMICs

- Joint sessions at regional meetings in Africa, Southeast Asia, and South America

Education, Training, and Competency Support

We will expand the ISFA Learning Platform, integrating:

- Updated access to relevant clinical guidelines

- Monthly virtual grand rounds and case discussions

- A global apheresis fellowship directory

- A 'Visiting Scholar' exchange initiative for young practitioners and nurses

Interdisciplinary Research and Innovation

ISFA must become a driver, not just a recorder, of apheresis innovation.  We will consider:

- Launch an ISFA Collaborative Registry Project

- Support multicenter trials for non-traditional indications

- Expand publication opportunities in our affiliated journal

Organizational Strength and Visibility

We plan to invest in:

- A modernized ISFA website

- Professional Congress Organization (PCO) partnerships

- Enhanced social media

- Look to strengthen alliances with ASFA, WAA, ISN, EBMT, and others

Allow me to briefly reflect on my own personal journey; from birth in Toronto, Canada to parents who were international students to my formative years and medical school in Ibadan, Nigeria followed by specialist training in Connecticut, USA and now a career that has brought me to full tenured professorship at University of Virginia, USA while practicing Apheresis Medicine. I am a multinational citizen of the world that has benefited from the power of mentorship, access, and service to others that have all shaped my path. I am committed to paying that forward during my term as ISFA President and beyond.

It gives me great pleasure to announce the 16th ISFA World Congress in 2027, which will be held in the United States.

After extensive evaluation, we are pleased to announce that the final decision will be made in the following month or two and presented to the council for ratification. Regardless of final choice, it will be an exceptional event.

In closing, I invite every member to engage actively. Join a committee. Mentor a colleague. Submit a case or abstract.

Together, we will advance the science, clinical practice, and global reach of apheresis.

Thank you, and I look forward to serving you.
